Don’t overdo it. Only plan to visit 3-4 wineries per day. Take your time, enjoy the wine.
If your group has a small range of wines they like, familiarize yourself with which wines are made at the wineries you choose. With that said, the adventure of trying new varietals is a lot of fun.
Wine regions have a combination of small production, family run wineries along with the larger producers. Some are by “appointment only” and some require reservations for groups. It’s best to plan ahead.
“Tula, eat something!” Don’t spend your day wine tasting with no food and water. There are top-notch restaurants to explore in wine country. You can also add a bagged lunch to any tour. More information can be found here.
Don’t be afraid to spit. It may seem uncivilized, but this is a very acceptable practice when tasting. You get to enjoy the wine without the side effects of alcohol. Just ask for a spit bucket.
Remember to Purchase Wines You Enjoy: Many of the wines you’ll taste while touring Hershey Harrisburg Wine Country are only available in the tasting rooms, so it is a good idea to purchase wines you want to take home.
Wineries operate under specific licenses issued by the State Liquor Control Board that allow them to provide tastings of their wines in order to generate sales. It is illegal for customers to bring outside alcohol onto winery premises. It is also illegal for wineries to serve customers who are intoxicated or not of legal drinking age.
Wearing comfortable and casually elegant clothing to tasting rooms sets the tone for a sophisticated outing and is a sign of respect for wineries.
Be sure to take weather-appropriate gear (e.g. umbrellas and sturdy shoes during the rainy season; lighter clothing, hats and sunscreen in peak summer periods), especially if outdoor activities like vineyard treks and picnics are on your agenda.
A quick note on decorum: Wineries are wineries, not bars per se. Although alcohol is being served, it’s a relaxed and conversational environment. Save loud banter and raucous activities for later!
